In-Country /In-Region Scholarship Progammes

As part of the "In-Country /In-Region Scholarship Progamme", DAAD offers scholarships for PhD and Master studies. The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The "In-Country/ In-Region Scholarship Programme" supports studies in subject areas with strong relevance to national development.

The target group for scholarships are graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa with a first academic degree if applying for a master’s programme, or with a Master’s degree if applying for a doctoral programme who want to pursue Master’s or PhD courses in their home country (so called In-Country scholarships) or in another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region scholarships).


Centre d’Etude Régional pour l’Amélioration de l’Adaptation à la Sécheresse (CERAAS) in Senegal

CERAAS is offering up to 2 In-Region and 1 In-Country scholarships for PhD and up to 3 In-Region and 1 In-Country scholarships for Master studies for the intake 2017. The scholarships at CERAAS are available in the following fields:

  • Physiology
  • Genetics
  • Genomics
  • Agronomy
  • Plant Breeding
  • Plant Health
  • Agroforestry

Application Closing Date is 28th July 2017. The duration of the PhD programme is three years and the duration of the Master programme is two years starting in December 2017. For more information (requirements, application procedure etc.) please follow this link.

South African German Centre for Development Research (SA-GER CDR)

The SA-GER CDR at the University of the Western Cape trains the next generation of executive elites in Master’s and PhD degree programmes related to Development Studies. Students of the centre are given the preparation needed to meet the specific economic, social and political challenges which will arise in the course of the region’s development processes. The center is part of the African Excellence Network.

DAAD will arward 4 Master Scholarships in

  • Development Studies
  • Public Administration.

Moreover, DAAD arward 2 PhD scholarships in 

  • Development Studies
  • Public Policy.

Applicants from the continent - with background in Social Science, Political Science, Economics and applicants from all disciplines who's research interest ties are encouraged to apply. The Call for applications for Master and PhD Scholarships is open since April - and will be open until 31st July 2017. All applicants have to fill in an online application form.
