Tuition Fees
German public universities charge rather low tuition fees. This does not only apply to the German-taught programmes, but also to the English-taught programmes. Exceptions are MBA-programmes, summer courses and some very specific programmes. Private universities do charge tuition fees.
Tertiary education or higher education at German public universities used to be free of charge. However, the situation has changed over recent years. Now, a steadily growing number of the 16 federal German states charge tuition fees for undergraduate and graduate degree courses in state universities. In other words, the charge of tuition fees of around 500 euros per semester ( 2 semesters per year) depends both on your choice of federal state and university. Please note that fees at private institutions or special study programs can be higher.
