Language Examination

In order to enroll in a regular / traditional course which is taught in German, you have to pass one of the two German language proficieny examinations, TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) or DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studenten).

Both test results are fully acknowledged at German universities. Generally speaking, TestDaF can be taken outside Germany and also in Hong Kong at the Baptist University. DSH can only be taken in Germany.

TestDaF

TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache / Test of German as a Foreign Language) is a standardized language test designed to assess linguistic performance within the context of university life at an intermediate to advanced level.

This test is developed for candidates from foreign countries with considerably good knowledge of German who want to start or continue their course of study in Germany. TestDaf can also be taken simply as a placement test, and it may be taken repeatedly.

In terms of assessment, the results are classified into 3 levels: TDN3, TDN4 and TDN5. Most universities demand at least TDN4 as admission requirement for traditional/regular programmes.

The test centre of TestDaF is at the Hong Kong Baptist University. Goethe-Institut Hongkong offers preparation courses for TestDaF.

DSH

The DSH-tests are administered by the universities themselves in accordance with standardized regulations valid throughout Germany. You can sit the exam at the respective university usually 3 weeks before the terms starts.

You have to inquire the exact date at your chosen university. The universities will only allow the test to be retaken twice. After this it is no longer possible to register for the examination, not even at another university.

Most universities offer language courses to prepare for the DSH, but capacity is generally not sufficient to provide places for all applicants. However, you can find DSH-preparatory courses at private language schools in most university towns.

With regard to assessment, there is only Pass or Fail.

*Universities do not offer DSH-preparation courses for beginners.
