Apply directly at the university

Every university has its own International Student Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt - AAA) which provides necessary application forms.  Steps of application:

  1. Search for a suitable programme
  2. Check the application procedure (documents, deadlines, etc.) on the programme’s website.
  3. Fill out the application form and collect the necessary documents. Universities usually required applicants to authenticate their certificate, please contact the German Consulate General Hong Kong for the procedure.
  4. Send out the application package directly to the university.

After a successful application the Office for International Affairs will issue a certificate of admission (Zulassungsbescheid).

Apply via UNI-ASSIST

Starting from 2004, there is a change regarding the application procedures for international students. 106 German institutions of higher education currently participate in a programme called UNI-ASSIST (Arbeits- und Servicestelle für Internationale Studienbewerbungen - Application Service System for International Students).

With UNI-ASSIST you can apply simultaneously to more than one UNI-ASSIST universities by submitting one set of authenticated copies only. Your application will be pre-checked by UNI-ASSIST and you will receive information if your documents are complete. UNI-ASSIST charges applicants accordingly for their service:

First Application: 75 Euro
Each Additional Application: 30 Euro

Application Deadlines

WS Winter Semester (October to February) - 1 July or 15 July

SS Summer Semester (April to July) - 15 January (only a few bachelor's programmes accept intake in SS)

*For DSE Applicants, the application deadline is usually very close to the date when you receive your DSE report card. Universities do not accept incomplete or belated application. Please be aware of it. You may also ask the university for more details.

  7. Motivation Letter (If necessary)
  8. Proof of work experience (if necessary)
  9. Reference Letter(s) (If necessary)

*Both deadlines and documents vary from programme to programme, you should check the details of individual university/programme carefully before submitting the application!
