About Us

The DAAD - Goals and roles

The German Academic Exchange Service or DAAD supports over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the globe each year – making it the world’s largest funding organisation of its kind. We also promote internationalisation efforts at German universities, help developing countries build their own systems of higher education, and support German Studies and German language programmes abroad.

Since it was founded in 1925 more than 1.9 million scholars in Germany and abroad have received DAAD funding. In 2014 DAAD had 441 million Euros at its disposal. Its most important funding providers include the Federal Foreign Office - AA (40%), Federal Ministry of Education and Research- BMBF (23%), Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development – BMZ (9%) and the European Union – EU (15%).

DAAD operates a network of 70 Regional Offices and Information Centres worldwide.

With the motto “Change for Exchange” we promote academic exchange through “Scholarship for the Best”, “Structures for Internalisation” and “Expertise for Academic Collaborations”.
