Graduate Study in Engineering Science
An International Program for Cutting-Edge Research

The Aachen Institute for Advanced Study in Computational Engineering Science (AICES) is a graduate school established within the framework of the German Excellence Initiative aiming to promote top-level research at German universities. AICES offers an English-based doctoral program for students with a recent Bachelor’s or Master’s/Diploma degree. A novel advising concept based on close scientific guidance leads to reduced time-to-degree.

Computational engineering already plays a central role in process and product design, production planning, and operations, while computational science has joined the analytical and experimental avenues of investigation as a widely accepted third pillar of scientific inquiry. Thus, AICES focuses on diverse fields of computational engineering science such as computational modeling, numerical mathematics, inverse problems, computational materials science, computational geoscience, computational biology, bioinformatics, imaging as well as high performance computing. Current research projects culminating in a doctoral degree (Dr.-Ing. or Dr. rer. nat.) can be found in many application areas. including, but not limited to, computer vision, image processing, automation, molecular simulations and transformations, automatic differentiation, computational fluid dynamics, energy systems, global optimization, model identification, numerical linear algebra, numerical methods for PDE’s, as well as optimal control and design.

The program is open to a limited number of extremely well qualified students from around the world with an excellent background in engineering, natural science, mathematics or computer science. Admitted candidates receive a stipend of 2000 € per month during the doctoral phase and 649 € per month during the master’s phase.

Holders of bachelor’s degrees applying for the combined master’s and doctoral program should submit their application by April 15 for admission in the winter semester.

Candidates holding master’s degrees (or equivalent) may apply for direct admission to the doctoral phase at any time.

Scholarships for German undergraduates for lab placements worldwide, summer 2014.

Following on from the success of the RISE intern program inviting US and UK undergraduates on internships to Germany, DAAD now has a reciprocal program offering German undergraduates the opportunity of an internship abroad over the summer.

DAAD is inviting research groups from all over the world who are interested in hosting a German undergraduate to assist in their research in the summer of 2014 to submit their internship project online at www.daad.de/rise-programs.

In this program, research groups, laboratories and doctoral students can apply to host a motivated and well-qualified student from Germany as a research intern to assist with a proposed project. Students participating in this program come from the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, medicine, or a closely related field, and will receive a DAAD scholarship to help cover living expenses and travel costs.

If you are interested then please go to http://www.daad.de/rise-weltweit/en/index.html. Here, you will find the database where you can enter your project offers. The database opens October 7, 2013 and the deadline for entering your project is November 24, 2013. After that, the database is closed for the internship providers and the students can review the offers and apply for the projects.
Once DAAD has approved your offer, it will be posted in the intern database on our website. This database is accessible to anyone who is interested in applying and has registered online.

Each student applying for an internship may apply for up to three projects, between December 2, 2013 and January 12, 2014. The prospective hosts are then asked to provide DAAD with their quality assessment of the applications for their projects.
Please note: Only those students whose applications have been accepted, reviewed and ranked by a potential host are placed with that host’s project. We do our best to account for both the preferences of the students and of the hosts. However, we cannot guarantee in every case that a project provider will be matched with his or her top applicant.
